Opened in September 2004, Dover Street Market is a 1200 square metre store in the centre of London, conceived by Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons. It was initiated as a fresh approach to the upmarket retail environment. The store covers six floors in a converted Georgian building in Mayfair and houses all the Comme des Garçons brands. Alongside these sit other specially selected designers and artists. In keeping with the Dover Street Market concept, design houses are left the freedom to determine their own brand spaces within the store, whilst artists, film and theatre designers are frequently invited to intervene in existing spaces. There are no set criteria for Dover Street Market; the diverse arrays of collections include established labels and emerging talents, through to traditional products that transcend fashion. The most important underlying factor is that every brand has a strong vision and something original to say. Its reputation as a destination for like minded shoppers is enhanced by the surroundings which consist of interior spaces that appear unfinished, which is deliberate and thought provoking. The Fourth Floor hosts the London outpost of Rose Bakery. On the Third Floor, Lanvin and Yves Saint Laurent spaces are side by side with installations from Stephen Jones and Michael Howells. The Second Floor’s Celine corner was designed by Phoebe Philo, and is also home to the curated area by Michael Costiff’s World Archive. London’s largest Azzedine Alaia collection lies beside Comme des Garçons Shirt on the First Floor, leading down to the Jewellery Space featuring both well established and avant garde designs. Limited edition pieces from cult and underground labels are found in the Basement, though these are also found through the store. In January and July, Dover Street Market holds a biannual ‘Tachiagari’, where the store is closed down for several days; the interior again evolves, with designers coming in to reconfigure their spaces and introduce new season merchandise. In addition, the store constantly receives new stock including limited edition pieces from the Comme des Garçons collections as well as from the myriad of innovative designers which sit alongside them.
